The rapid development of the digital economy has revolutionized the traditional business ecosystem. Platform companies have become an important link between the market and stakeholders, promoting the digital and intellectual development of the economy. This case describes how the goal of the Alibaba Group’s corporate social responsibility efforts has gradually shifted from commercial competition to social goals through its rural revitalization strategy from the 2010s to 2020s. As one of the world’s largest e-commerce platform companies, the Alibaba Group has been promoting rural economic and social development, such as rural poverty alleviation and rural revitalization, through its e-commerce platform, digital technology, and public welfare projects. This case may serve as a reference for uncovering CSR strategies of e-commerce platform companies, especially within the complex institutional context of emerging markets. It also helps students understand the business model of e-commerce companies, the types of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and motivations for using them, and how platform companies position and implement political social responsibility strategies according to their own resources and capabilities. It can be used for courses on business ethics, strategic management, and business models.
