CVS Health: Prescription for Transformation

The years since the 2018 Aetna merger that brought Lynch to CVS Health had been consequential. By that time, CVS Health was already well along on its transformation from a drug store chain to a multi-faceted provider of health care benefits and services. Though candy remained on store shelves, tobacco did not. Then, in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated further changes even as it initially emptied stores. CVS Health became a major testing site and, when vaccines became available, a major vaccination site. During the pandemic, CVS Health developed new products and services, such as entering individual insurance exchanges with a co-branded CVS Health and Aetna product and identifying diverse participants for clinical trials to speed inclusive drug development. By the end of fiscal year 2020, stores accounted for only about a third of CVS Health's $269 billion in revenues, pharmacy services about half, and health care benefits another third.
