In January 2023, Curtis Osceola, Chief of Staff of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians since early 2022 gazed out his window. The tribe's first law school graduate, Osceola had grown up in Florida's Miami-Dade and Collier counties, which contained part of the Everglades, a natural region of tropical wetlands. For centuries, the Everglades had been home to the Miccosukee. Now this area, vital to adjacent cities as well, was further threatened by global warming. As Osceola gazed out of the big windows over miles of land his tribe wanted to protect, Osceola reflected on the history and urgency of climate action.
