The New York Liberty: Building the Business of Women's Basketball

In May 2025, Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) team the New York Liberty raised their 2024 championship banner. The team's owners, Clara Wu Tsai and her husband Joseph Tsai, had acquired the Liberty in 2019, when the once flourishing team had seemingly hit rock bottom. The Tsais decided to move the team to the Barclays Center, significantly invested in the team's roster, professionalized the Liberty's organization, and mounted a new marketing and branding campaign. Now, in only their sixth season as owners, the Tsais had captured the WNBA title-the Liberty's first in 28 years. In doing so, they had also shown that when "treated as a business," as Wu Tsai put it, women's sports teams could find significant success. Were the New York Liberty well-positioned to sustain that success? How could Wu Tsai best steer the franchise toward her goal of repeated on-the-court victories as well as off-the-court commercial success, eventually leading the team to cross the $1-billion valuation mark? And how could owners like the Tsais best contribute to the growth of women's sport in general?
