The case describes how Xia (Susan) Li, a Chinese social entrepreneur from humble origins, built her social enterprise called "Power Solution" (SPS) in Shenzhen, China with the purpose of serving off-grid Africa with affordable green solutions. This teaching note is designed for a 90-minute case discussion, where students put themselves in the shoes of the case protagonist (Susan) and try to think about her dilemmas and challenges in scaling up the business and serving more consumers. 15 years on from SPS was founded, this case study could inspire students through the decision-making process in building and nurturing an international social business, for example, expanding the product portfolio and customer segments, localizing the supply chain in Africa, finding the right talent and impact investors, and seeking corporate strategic partners. The case challenges students to grapple with how to balance the competing concerns of stakeholders in the social sector, where companies want to both "do good" in the world and "do well" financially.
