WeDoctor (originally Guahao.com) is an online healthcare platform approved by China’s National Health Commission. Since its founding in 2010, WeDoctor has focused on addressing the social problems of the uneven distribution of health resources and the mismatch between medical supply and demand. This platform started as a registration service and gradually solved users’ initial trust problem by means of technology and management, motivating more users to join WeDoctor. To gain a sustained competitive advantage, WeDoctor has continuously expanded its business to medical guidance, health consultation, and healthcare services; has gradually formed a healthcare ecosystem of medical care, medicine production/circulation, and medical insurance; and has become a leader in the field of Internet healthcare in China. This case focuses on the process of WeDoctor providing a healthcare ecosystem for users. Specifically, this case discusses how WeDoctor has identified a new “blue ocean” in the healthcare industry according to industry characteristics and user needs, how it used technology and management to solve the initial trust problem of the Internet healthcare app to gain more users, how it differentiated itself and gained a competitive advantage, and finally how WeDoctor implemented an ecosystem strategy and changed the value chain of the healthcare industry, creating value for patients and doctors.
