This technical note introduces the Scientist–Artist–Judge (SAJ) framework, a practical model for understanding and improving how people think through complex managerial and leadership challenges. The framework is grounded in the observation that poor decisions often stem not from a lack of intelligence or effort, but from over-reliance on a single mode of thinking—analysis, imagination, or judgment—at the expense of balance. SAJ conceptualizes effective thinking as the productive integration of three roles: the Scientist, who seeks accurate understanding; the Artist, who imagines new possibilities; and the Judge, who evaluates what is appropriate and worthwhile. The note outlines each role, illustrates common patterns of unbalanced thinking, and demonstrates how balanced thought enhances decision quality in ambiguous, high-stakes, or emotionally charged situations.

This technical note is suitable for use in MBA, executive education, and advanced undergraduate courses on leadership, managerial decision making, ethics, innovation, and professional judgment.
