The healthcare sector is the largest in the US economy and is uniquely complex, with strict regulations, numerous interconnected stakeholders, and intricate workflows. Historically, although rich in data, healthcare companies have been relatively slow to adopt technological innovations due to significant integration challenges, regulatory complexities, and entrenched traditional practices.

The past decade has seen incredible progress in artificial intelligence (AI), and it has become a key part of the healthcare industry for both patients and practitioners, revolutionizing diagnostics, therapeutics, treatment, and more across the health system. This technical note explores the integration of AI within various healthcare domains at an introductory level. It is organized around four key domains: (1) pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, (2) care delivery and patient engagement, (3) health insurance and payers, and (4) public and population health.

At the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, the technical note is used in "Healthcare Marketing" in the MBA program. This note is ideal for undergraduate and graduate courses on healthcare, technology, marketing, and management of healthcare organizations.
