The first chapter opens with background information, describing the current state of DEI in the workplace and why it is lacking. The author details the main biases creating the biggest obstacles for employees, particularly women and people of color. This data was sourced using a scale of the author's own creation called the "Workplace Experiences Survey" and various lab studies. The evidence shows that these biases negatively impact employees, workplace processes, and the overall well-being of the company. Although these biases affect each minority group differently, white men experience any negative impact from these biases at dramatically lower rates than any other group. Consequently, they tend to be at the top of the hierarchy, which also makes them responsible for integrating DEI, while being unable to see how such interventions, or lack thereof, impact their colleagues. The author argues this is part of the reason why there has not been much of a shift towards increased diversity. She then provides a brief overview of what future chapters will cover.
