6: "The Epidemic" from The Imagination Machine: How to Spark New Ideas and Create Your Company's Future

It is important, as discussed in this chapter, to communicate ideas. Spreading an idea across multiple imaginations in a business will allow for the idea to be examined, accelerated, and amplified. The chapter first addresses difficulties in achieving intersubjectivity-the shared understanding and acceptance of the same ideas and mental models. The chapter then notes how important it is to talk to one another, allowing everyone to express ideas and get on the same page. It then goes on to discuss how the "refocus, move, and probe" technique mentioned prior can be altered slightly to work for a group of like-minded thinkers. As with previous chapters, the authors close by discussing some common obstacles faced during this process, noting key issues specific to large group collaboration, such as limiting bureaucracy, the cacophony of competing ideas, and fracturing into smaller groups. Some games and guiding questions are offered as well.
