In this chapter, the authors explore how AI can be used as a tool instead of a replacement for human imagination. They go back over each of the steps associated with the imagination process and look at how each one can be assisted by AI with human guidance. They provide some graphics detailing the different aspects of AI-human collaboration on an X-Y axis of efficiency and imagination and empathetic versus systematic skills. The main takeaway of the chapter is that AI is helpful at doing much of the time-consuming processes that go into imagination so that more time can be left for humans to ideate. For example, it can help with a lot of the probing needed to test out different versions of a new mental model. By running multiple simulations at a time, it can guide a company in the direction of what is most likely to be effective, which they can then use to change and adapt the mental model accordingly. The chapter closes with some food for thought regarding whether humans may be able to find imaginative sparks or learn new mental models from AI, showing a possibility for a symbiotic relationship.
