The single most common source of leadership failure--in politics, community life, business, or the nonprofit sector--is that people in leadership positions treat adaptive challenges like technical problems. What many leaders don't realize, however, is the danger they put themselves in by simply attempting to effect change. People by nature resist change, especially if it involves loss or uncertainty. The leader's challenge is to help people adapt to, and ultimately thrive in, evolving circumstances, and to "stay alive" in the process. This chapter looks at that source of leadership failure. This chapter was originally published as Chapter 1 of "Leadership on the Line."
