Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Anthony J. Mayo, and David A. Thomas that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. The third section-comprising chapters 8 through 15-discusses phenomenological studies that qualitatively research the lived experience of a subject, trusting them to be the speaker and expert on their own life. Chapter 13 assesses the challenges facing African American women in higher education and explore the complexities of African American women scholar-activists' lived experiences as change agents in predominantly white institutions. The chapter is built around a qualitative, grounded theory study and the theoretical propositions that emerged from the experiences of African American women in predominantly white colleges.
