Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Anthony J. Mayo, and David A. Thomas that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. The fourth section-comprising chapters 16 through 21-takes a critical theory lens that makes visible the experiences of Black leadership and pushes existing theories so that they are more applicable to a diverse range of experiences, including those of African Americans. Chapter 16 explores the nature and efficacy of diversity and inclusion programs. Designing for Black inclusion builds on fundamental principles of fostering an inclusive climate but incorporates a critical parameter: programs, practices, and structures that eradicate for Blacks the perception that race will be a barrier to advancement.
