Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Anthony J. Mayo, and David A. Thomas that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. The second section-comprising chapters 5 through 7-covers some comparative studies investigating race, primarily using large data sets to identify disparities between white and Black people. Chapter 5 examines the experience of Black professionals as it relates to employee engagement. The chapter counters the assumption that engagement is an indicator of inclusivity in the workplace; instead, an accurate evaluation of engagement for Black professionals must consider the complexity added by environmental factors such as organizational culture, employee level, and career trajectory.
