Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Anthony J. Mayo, and David A. Thomas that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. The third section-comprising chapters 8 through 15-discusses phenomenological studies that qualitatively research the lived experience of a subject, trusting them to be the speaker and expert on their own life. Chapter 15 covers the experience of the authors at a group relations conference they held in the spring of 2017 that examined leadership, authority, and identity in the post-Obama era. The conference was focused on learning about those unconscious, implicit, and often indiscernible aspects of how the matter of Black lives is a part of our discourse and actions, individually and collectively. The conference staff was composed of only Black authorities, and the purpose of the conference was, at its core, to provide an opportunity to study authority as inhabited by Black people.
