Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Anthony J. Mayo, and David A. Thomas that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. The fourth section-comprising chapters 16 through 21-takes a critical theory lens that makes visible the experiences of Black leadership and pushes existing theories so that they are more applicable to a diverse range of experiences, including those of African Americans. Chapter 17 examines the experiences of African American CEOs. The authors seek to understand the extent to which African Americans were appointed to positions requiring crisis leadership, characterize their leadership strategies, and understand the career implications for African Americans in glass-cliff situations.
