Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Anthony J. Mayo, and David A. Thomas that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. The third section-comprising chapters 8 through 15-discusses phenomenological studies that qualitatively research the lived experience of a subject, trusting them to be the speaker and expert on their own life. Chapter 8 examines the perceptions of diversity programs within the healthcare sector using interviews with Black doctors, nurses, and technicians. The author proposes that occupational status matters in shaping not only how healthcare workers see diversity efforts but also their assessments of how these programs impact their own work and their pathways to leadership.
