Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Anthony J. Mayo, and David A. Thomas that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. The first section-comprising chapters 2 through 4-discusses history and critical questions in Black business leadership. Chapter 3 presents a portrait of the backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of Black alumni of the Harvard Business School MBA program. With this study, HBS has allowed itself to be exposed in a way that other schools have not, allowing the authors to focus on race with an historical lens, looking at the composition and experiences of Black alumni over several decades. Chapter 3 also includes two commentaries-one from Melissa E. Wooten that explores the critical and often unheralded role that historically Black colleges and universities play in the educational landscape. The second commentary is from Arthur P. Brief, who addresses the explicit and subtle forms of racism that affect Black professionals.
