Race, Work, and Leadership is a rare and important compilation of essays edited by Laura Morgan Roberts, Anthony J. Mayo, and David A. Thomas that examines how race matters in people's experience of work and leadership. The fourth section-comprising chapters 16 through 21-takes a critical theory lens that makes visible the experiences of Black leadership and pushes existing theories so that they are more applicable to a diverse range of experiences, including those of African Americans. Chapter 18 focuses on the individual, minority group, and organizational costs of diversity loss-specifically, when Black leaders leave. The authors discuss the consequences of Black leaders leaving for Black leaders themselves, for their minority followers, and for their organizations. The authors conclude with recommendations for retaining Black leadership in order to avoid such negative consequences.
